Hallo Forum,

So, falls jemand interessiert ist, check out die City of Edmonton Website www.edmonton.ca go to Emergency Services oder The City of Calgary Website www.calgary.ca go to city hall- buisness units-fire department

Boom a bust for firefighter recruiters
Low numbers of applicants raises concerns

EDMONTON - Alberta's labour market is on fire, so much so that it's difficult to find people who want to be firefighters.

"We're down to 400 to 600 applications a year," said Edmonton Fire Rescue Services instructor Bob Ritchie after a recruitment information session held at the fire training school on Saturday.

"We used to get 3,500 to 4,000 applications not so long ago."

Calgary's situation is even worse. Less than 100 applications were received over the past year, forcing them to send recruitment posters up to Edmonton in the hopes of finding some new blood. Ritchie admitted it was rather surprising.

For 30-year veteran Dale Fournier, the problem lies in the job boom happening all across the country.

"There's too many other opportunities," Fournier said. "Candidates are able to go into the oilpatch and make all this fantastic money. But I've been with the fire department for 35 years. It's a career choice. You'll always have employment here."

Becoming an Edmonton firefighter is a long and sometimes difficult process that takes almost a year to complete. The numerous steps include aptitude tests and a gruelling physical exam replicating some of the job's tasks that leaves many applicants gasping.

However, for some of the 40 potential candidates who attended this weekend's session, the process is well worth it.

"The appeal for me is the lifestyle, how these guys work, the nature of the job itself -- just a bunch of guys hanging out at the fire hall all day seems like a good deal," said 25-year-old hopeful Rod Curtis, who is competing for a position for the second year in a row after failing to make the cut last year.

"There's a labour shortage, but the jobs that are hard to get, like this, are always going to have a high demand."

"You can't just 'wing' it," said 22-year-old Shawn Fournier, Dale's son. "It shows a lot of commitment to go through it."

A recruit who manages to jump through all the hoops can expect eventually to join Edmonton's team of 900-plus firefighters at a starting salary of approximately $39,800. After five years, the average salary tops out at $67,000.

Today's job market might be taking applications away from the fire department, but the quality of the applications remains seemingly unaffected, according to Dale Fournier.

"The rookies have been excellent, we've had no issues," he said. "The training school does a very good job of getting them into shape and giving them the right attitude."

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is opening applications for candidates starting Monday, and complete information about the process and its prerequisites can be found online at www.edmonton.ca/firerecruitment.

Shawn Fournier and Rod Curtis are gearing up for the long process and are somewhat dreading the final step.

"That physical is brutal," said Curtis.

"You definitely need to lose those winter pounds," added Fournier.

For father Dale, having his son join him would extend a family tradition of public service.

"I would be very proud," he said. "The job's always been really good to me and it would give him a good lifetime career."
